Nubiola - Joan Miró

A 1917 portrait by Joan Miró, featuring bold Fauvist colours and expressive, distorted forms in a study of his friend, Francesc V. Nubiola.

Painted in 1917, this portrait depicts Francesc V. Nubiola, a Catalan philosopher and friend of the artist. The work belongs to Miró's early period, during which he experimented with the bold colour palettes and expressive brushwork associated with Fauvism. The subject sits at a table, rendered with a deliberate distortion of form that prioritises emotional impact over strict anatomical accuracy.

The composition is dense with geometric shapes and rhythmic lines. Miró employs a palette of warm ochres, deep reds, and contrasting cool tones to define the figure and the surrounding space. A pipe rests in the subject's mouth, while a carafe and a small potted plant occupy the table surface. Behind the sitter, a decorative, patterned object adds a layer of visual complexity, echoing the stylistic influence of Van Gogh and the early modernists who shaped Miró's formative years.

This piece captures a specific moment in the artist's development, moving away from traditional academic portraiture toward the symbolic and surrealist language he would later refine. The application of paint is thick and deliberate, creating a textured surface that draws the eye across the canvas. By flattening the perspective and emphasising the interplay of colour, Miró creates a sense of psychological presence. The portrait remains a clear example of his engagement with European avant-garde movements before he fully transitioned into his signature style of abstract, biomorphic forms.

You might also like

A Woman's Portrait by Kees van Dongen
Woman with Cockerel by Pablo Picasso

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-V_Poster_CompositorV1_1792122813097.jpg?v=1792212425
