portrait-of-victoria-princess-royal-hermann-sagert
Portrait of Victoria, Princess Royal - Hermann Sagert

A refined nineteenth-century engraving by Hermann Sagert, depicting Victoria, Princess Royal, with delicate line work and formal composition.

This engraving by Hermann Sagert depicts Victoria, Princess Royal, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Created during the mid-nineteenth century, the work captures the subject in a formal, composed manner typical of royal portraiture from the period. Sagert employs precise line work to render the texture of the subject's gown and the soft modelling of her features, demonstrating the technical proficiency required for high-quality steel or copper plate engraving.

The composition is restrained, focusing on the sitter against a simple, shadowed background that suggests an interior setting. The light source is directed from the upper left, creating subtle gradations of tone across the face and shoulders. This technique provides a sense of volume and depth without relying on excessive ornamentation. The artist's signature is visible in the lower margin, confirming the provenance of this print as a professional production of the era.

Victoria, Princess Royal, later became the German Empress and Queen of Prussia through her marriage to Frederick III. This portrait reflects her status as a figure of European political and social interest during the Victorian age. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic conventions applied to royal iconography, where the emphasis remains on the dignity and composure of the sitter. The monochromatic palette and the fine cross-hatching used to define the folds of the fabric are characteristic of the period's printmaking traditions. This piece offers a glimpse into the dissemination of royal imagery through reproductive print media, which allowed the public to engage with the likenesses of prominent figures of the nineteenth century.

You might also like

Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen by George Baxter
Standbeeld van koning Leopold I by Erin Corr

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Victoria-Princess-Royal_Poster_CompositorV1_1791875324355.jpg?v=1791875578
