portrait-of-vincent-van-gogh-the-artists-grandfather-vincent-van-gogh
Portrait of Vincent van Gogh, the Artist's Grandfather - Vincent van Gogh

An early charcoal and wash portrait by Vincent van Gogh, depicting his grandfather in profile with a focus on tonal depth and structural detail.

This portrait depicts the artist's grandfather, also named Vincent van Gogh, in a profile view. Executed in 1881, the work demonstrates the early technical development of the artist before his transition to the bold colour palettes associated with his later years in France. The medium consists of charcoal and wash, allowing for a focus on tonal contrast and the structural anatomy of the face.

The composition is austere, capturing the subject in a dark coat and cap against a neutral, shadowed background. The artist employs a firm, deliberate line to define the sharp features of the nose and the weathered texture of the skin. The use of wash provides depth to the clothing and the surrounding space, creating a sense of weight and presence. This study reflects the artist's early interest in the human figure and his practice of drawing from family members during his time in Etten.

Unlike the later, more expressive works that define his career, this piece shows a disciplined approach to traditional portraiture. The focus remains on the character of the sitter, rendered with a sombre, muted palette that emphasises the gravity of the subject. The work provides insight into the artist's formative training and his ability to capture personality through careful observation of light and shadow. It is a quiet, contemplative piece that documents a personal connection within the artist's family history, rendered with the technical precision of his early Dutch period.

You might also like

Mrs. Cassatt Reading to Her Grandchildren by Mary Cassatt
Georgiana Burne-Jones and their children, Margaret and Philip by Edward Burne-Jones
Vincent van Gogh prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portrait-of-Vincent-van-Gogh-the-Artist-s-Grandfather_Poster_CompositorV1_1791979109534.jpg?v=1791979588
https://www.solisprints.com/products/portrait-of-vincent-van-gogh-the-artists-grandfather-vincent-van-gogh
