The composition relies on a stark contrast between the dark, ink-heavy figure and the light, textured paper background. Stolk employs a reductive approach to form, where the subject is defined by silhouette and minimal internal detail. The dress is rendered with a subtle stippled effect, suggesting the fabric's texture without resorting to excessive shading or modelling.

The figure is captured in a moment of quiet contemplation, her head resting on her hand. The chair is suggested by a simple horizontal line and vertical supports, stripping away unnecessary domestic detail to focus on the posture and mood of the sitter. This economy of line is characteristic of early twentieth-century printmaking, where artists sought to distil the essence of their subjects through the physical limitations of the woodblock medium.

Stolk was associated with the artistic circles of the Netherlands during the interwar period. His work often reflects a synthesis of traditional craft and modern sensibilities. By using the woodcut technique, he embraces the inherent grain and texture of the block, which remains visible in the print. The result is a work that feels grounded in the material process. The print avoids decorative excess, favouring a clean, graphic quality that directs the viewer's attention to the silhouette of the woman. This piece offers a glimpse into the domestic life of the artist, rendered with a restrained and thoughtful hand.

You might also like

Portrait of a Man (M.C.
