The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century commemorative portraiture, presenting the subject as a bust set within a niche. Buchanan is shown with a fur-trimmed collar, his expression serious and scholarly. The artist includes various symbolic elements to denote the subject's intellectual contributions. To the left, an open book titled 'Historia Scotiae' rests beside a crown, while a harp and an oil lamp sit to the right. These objects signify his historical writing, his royal connections, and his poetic output.

Two medallions flank the central niche, featuring portraits of Mary, Queen of Scots, and James VI of Scotland. The lower section of the print is occupied by a substantial Latin inscription by Petrus Scriverius, which praises Buchanan's literary achievements and his status as a leading poet of his time. The engraving technique is precise, using fine hatching to create volume in the drapery and depth within the architectural setting. The work functions as a visual eulogy, combining portraiture with emblematic objects to construct a narrative of the subject's life and intellectual standing. The inclusion of the Latin text reinforces the academic nature of the print, intended for a learned audience familiar with Buchanan's works. This piece is a clear example of the Dutch tradition of printmaking, where technical skill in line work was applied to historical and literary subjects for distribution among scholars and collectors.

You might also like

George Buchanan by Jacobus Houbraken
Portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam by Hans Holbein the Younger

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portret-van-George-Buchanan_Poster_CompositorV1_1791876676167.jpg?v=1791876793
