portret-van-hermanus-boerhaave-reinier-vinkeles
Portret van Hermanus Boerhaave - Reinier Vinkeles

A formal 1787 portrait engraving of the Dutch physician Hermanus Boerhaave by Reinier Vinkeles, presented in a classic oval frame.

This portrait depicts the Dutch physician and botanist Hermanus Boerhaave, a figure of significant influence in eighteenth-century medicine. The work is an etching and engraving by the Dutch artist Reinier Vinkeles, dated 1787. Vinkeles was a prolific printmaker, known for his technical precision and his contributions to the documentation of historical figures and architectural sites in the Netherlands.

The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture from the period. Boerhaave is presented within an oval frame, a common device in printmaking that directs the viewer's attention to the subject's facial features and expression. He is shown in clerical or academic attire, featuring a distinctive white neckband, which reflects his status as a scholar and professor at the University of Leiden. The shading within the oval is achieved through fine cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and depth in the subject's face and clothing.

Below the oval portrait, the print includes a rectangular plinth or pedestal element. This architectural feature contains a cartouche with the subject's name, 'HERMANUS BOERHAAVE', inscribed in clear, formal lettering. The inclusion of this base adds a sense of monumentality to the portrait, elevating the subject in a manner consistent with commemorative prints of the era. The print also bears the names of the contributors, including the draughtsman Jacobus Buys, whose work Vinkeles translated into this engraved format. The overall aesthetic is one of restraint and clarity, characteristic of the late eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking tradition. This piece provides a clear example of the collaborative nature of print production during this time, where draughtsmen and engravers worked in tandem to produce high-quality reproductions for academic and public circulation.

You might also like

Portret van Gisberus Bonnet by Reinier Vinkeles (I)
Portret van August Quirinus Rivinus by Martin Bernigeroth
Reinier Vinkeles artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portret-van-Hermanus-Boerhaave_Poster_CompositorV1_1791859308801.jpg?v=1791859567
