De La Rue

A formal eighteenth-century engraving depicting J.B. van Lack, a Brussels merchant, presented within a structured architectural frame.

This engraving presents a formal portrait of J.B. van Lack, a merchant born in Brussels in 1738. The subject is depicted within a classic oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century portraiture intended for inclusion in books or personal collections. The artist, J.F. De La Rue, employs precise line work to define the facial features, the texture of the subject's coat, and the subtle shading of the background. The composition is contained within a rectangular border featuring architectural motifs, which provides a sense of structure and formality to the piece.

Beneath the portrait, the text identifies the sitter as a 'Négociant' and notes his role as 'Syndic de la Nation de S. Cristophe' in 1787. This inscription provides historical context, linking the individual to the professional and civic life of the period. The engraving style is typical of the late eighteenth century, prioritising clarity and a balanced arrangement of elements. The use of hatching and cross-hatching techniques creates depth and volume, particularly in the rendering of the subject's clothing and the soft modelling of the face.

As a museum-grade print, this work offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the late 1700s. It captures the professional identity of a merchant through the lens of contemporary graphic arts. The print is presented on high-quality paper, preserving the fine details of the original engraving process. This piece is suitable for those interested in historical portraiture, the history of trade in the Low Countries, or the technical development of European printmaking during the Neoclassical era.

You might also like

L'Innocence - Charles Clément Bervic — Charles Clément Bervic
Three Fates - Vincenzio Benucci — Vincenzio Benucci

J.F.
