Hovius is depicted in three-quarter view, wearing the sober, dark attire typical of a Dutch clergyman of the period, complete with a simple white collar. His expression is composed, directed toward the viewer with a sense of quiet authority. The artist employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the folds of the heavy fabric of his cloak and the subtle contours of his face.

The background features architectural elements, specifically a column and a suggestion of a study or library setting, which serve to ground the figure within a scholarly environment. Below the image, the print includes a formal inscription identifying the subject as Jacobus Hovius, an ecclesiast from Enkhuizen, along with the date of his death in 1674. The text below the name provides a poetic eulogy in Dutch, reflecting the commemorative nature of such prints in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century.

Jan de Visscher was a skilled engraver and etcher, known for his ability to translate the nuances of painted portraits into the medium of print. His work here demonstrates a high degree of technical control, particularly in the rendering of textures and the modulation of light across the sitter's features. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing the viewer's attention on the character of the subject rather than decorative excess. This print offers a clear window into the visual culture of the Dutch Golden Age, where portraiture served both as a record of individual identity and a medium for public remembrance. The clarity of the lines and the formal arrangement of the elements make this an excellent example of the period's printmaking standards.
