Produced in 1792, the work reflects the technical precision common to late 18th-century portraiture. The stipple technique, which relies on small dots to create tonal variation rather than continuous lines, allows for a soft, painterly quality that mimics the appearance of a wash drawing.

Bicker is shown in a circular frame, a format frequently employed for commemorative or personal portraiture during this period. He wears the formal attire of a gentleman of his station, including a cravat and a coat with a high collar. His hair is styled in a queue, consistent with the fashion of the late 1700s. The surrounding text, 'J.B. Bicker, aetatis 44 Anno 1792', provides clear identification and dating, typical of the era's documentary approach to portrait prints.

François Joseph Pfeiffer (I) was a German artist who spent much of his career in the Netherlands. His work often demonstrates a high degree of control over the engraving medium, particularly in the rendering of facial features and fabric textures. The composition is restrained and formal, focusing entirely on the subject's profile. The use of the circular vignette draws the viewer's attention to the sitter, removing extraneous background detail. This print serves as a record of an individual from the Dutch elite, preserved through the meticulous craft of the engraver. The tonal depth achieved through the stipple method provides a subtle transition between light and shadow, giving the portrait a sense of volume despite its two-dimensional nature.

You might also like

Neo-classical Vases in a Landscape - Jean Charles Delafosse — Jean Charles Delafosse
A Grecian Lovely - John William Godward — John William Godward

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portret-van-Jan-Bernd-Bicker-op-44-jarige-leeftijd_Poster_CompositorV1_1791861165014.jpg?v=1791862118
https://www.solisprints.com/products/portret-van-jan-bernd-bicker-op-44-jarige-leeftijd-francois-joseph-pfeiffer-i
