This period marked a shift in her practice as she moved away from the strict geometric abstraction of her earlier Parisian work towards a more fluid, rhythmic application of colour. The composition reflects her observations of local life, yet it avoids literal representation in favour of capturing the sensory experience of a bustling market environment.

In this work, Delaunay employs the principles of simultaneity, a concept she developed alongside her husband, Robert Delaunay. The canvas is organised through overlapping circular forms and arcs that suggest the movement of crowds and the display of goods. Rather than defining objects through contour, she uses colour planes to create a sense of depth and energy. The palette includes warm ochres, deep reds, and cool blues, which interact to produce a sense of light and motion.

Her approach to this subject demonstrates an interest in the interaction of contrasting hues. By placing complementary colours side by side, she generates a visual vibration that mimics the chaotic, sensory-rich atmosphere of a marketplace. The forms are abstracted to their essential components, allowing the viewer to perceive the rhythm of the scene rather than its specific details. This piece is representative of her broader contribution to early twentieth-century modernism, where she applied these same principles to textiles, fashion, and book design. The work remains a clear example of her ability to translate the energy of a specific location into a purely visual language of form and colour.

You might also like

Window (Robert Delaunay) by Robert Delaunay
Cosmic Synchromy by Morgan Russell

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Portuguese-Market_Poster_CompositorV1_1792122279643.jpg?v=1792208258
