The composition focuses on Princess Ogimi, who is shown playing a biwa, a traditional Japanese lute, while seated on a wooden veranda. The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the soft tones of the silk to provide a neutral background that emphasises the figure of the princess. Her attire, rendered with careful attention to the layered robes characteristic of the Heian period, provides a subtle contrast to the surrounding architectural elements.

The scene captures a moment of quiet contemplation. The veranda extends over a small stream, a detail that connects the interior space to the natural world outside. Hishikawa Waō uses thin, precise lines to define the structure of the building and the delicate features of the subject. The overall arrangement is balanced, with the figure positioned to draw the eye toward the centre of the frame. The use of space is characteristic of the period, where the void is as important as the painted elements themselves.

As a representative of the Ukiyo-e tradition, this piece demonstrates the technical skill involved in depicting literary narratives through visual media. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, opting instead for a refined approach that aligns with the aesthetic sensibilities of the time. The work is mounted on a scroll, which is typical for paintings of this era, and the inclusion of calligraphic elements adds a layer of historical context to the image. This print offers a view into the cultural narratives that shaped Japanese art, providing a clear example of how classical literature was interpreted by artists working in the early eighteenth century.

You might also like

Mountains and Rivers Along the Kisokaidō - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
Daimyo Procession to Edo - Hishikawa School — Hishikawa School

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Princess-Ogimi-from-the-Bridge-Maiden_Poster_CompositorV1_1791617980891.jpg?v=1791618388
