This work reflects his characteristic approach to mark-making, where the boundary between drawing and painting dissolves. The composition centres on a dense, gestural cluster of red and pink pigments, which suggest a floral or organic form without adhering to strict representational rules. Twombly employs a variety of techniques, including thin, graphite lines that anchor the image and heavier, layered applications of oil paint that create texture and depth.

The title, Proteus, refers to the prophetic sea god of Greek mythology, known for his ability to shift shape. This thematic choice aligns with Twombly's interest in classical literature and mythology, which often informed his visual output. The work features his signature scrawled handwriting, with the title inscribed at the bottom and a date at the top, integrating text directly into the visual field. These elements are not merely decorative; they function as components of the overall composition, balancing the chaotic energy of the central mass.

Twombly's work from this period often explores the tension between order and disorder. The pale, neutral background provides a quiet space that allows the central burst of colour to dominate the viewer's attention. The application of paint appears spontaneous, yet it is controlled by the artist's deliberate placement of marks. This piece captures the raw, immediate quality of Twombly's practice, offering a glimpse into his process of translating classical themes into a modern, abstract language. The interplay of delicate graphite lines and aggressive, impasto-like strokes creates a dynamic visual experience that invites close observation of the surface.

You might also like

Untitled (SFP94-133) by Sam Francis
Reflections III by Helen Frankenthaler
More by Cy Twombly →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Proteus_Poster_CompositorV1_1792121337173.jpg?v=1792203817
