Attributed to the studio of Tawaraya Sōtatsu, the work demonstrates the mastery of ink wash techniques, known as tarashikomi, where diluted ink is applied to wet surfaces to create soft, modulated tones. The puppy is positioned in the lower portion of the vertical scroll, leaving a vast expanse of negative space above, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's posture and form.

The artist captures the essence of the animal through simple, rounded contours and subtle shading. The puppy's head is bowed, suggesting a moment of quiet observation or play. The lack of background detail is a hallmark of this period, focusing the viewer on the interplay between the ink and the paper's texture. The brushwork is deliberate, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation to maintain a sense of balance and clarity.

Tawaraya Sōtatsu was a central figure in the development of the Rinpa style during the early Edo period. His studio produced works that often combined decorative sensibilities with a keen observation of nature. This piece reflects the aesthetic preference for simplicity and the appreciation of the natural world, common in Japanese art of the seventeenth century. The muted palette, consisting primarily of varying shades of grey and black ink, provides a calm and contemplative visual experience. The mounting of the scroll, with its patterned silk borders, complements the understated nature of the central image, framing the puppy within a traditional format that has been preserved for centuries. This print offers a clear reproduction of the original ink wash, maintaining the soft transitions and the delicate balance of the composition.

You might also like

Visiting a Friend - Seki Shūkō — Seki Shūkō
Bird on a Cherry Branch and Minamotono Yoshiié on Horseback - Ryūryūkyo Shinsai — Ryūryūkyo Shinsai

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Puppy_Poster_CompositorV1_1791679300246.jpg?v=1791679510
