The cycle explores the cyclical nature of the seasons through a synthesis of gestural mark-making, calligraphic script, and chromatic shifts. In this specific work, Twombly addresses the theme of winter through a restricted palette of stark whites, deep blacks, and occasional bursts of yellow, which suggest the cold, dormant state of the natural world.

The composition is defined by a tension between controlled, rhythmic scribbles and aggressive, sweeping brushstrokes. Twombly employs a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, crayon, and graphite, to build a surface that feels both immediate and layered. The text integrated into the canvas serves as a visual element rather than a literal narrative, echoing the artist's interest in the intersection of language and gesture. The drips and splatters of paint across the lower portion of the canvas introduce a sense of gravity and decay, grounding the more ethereal, floating marks above.

Twombly's approach to the canvas avoids traditional representation. Instead, he focuses on the emotional and physical sensation of the season. The work reflects his long-standing engagement with classical themes, filtered through a modern, abstract sensibility. The surface is active, with lines that appear to emerge from and recede into the off-white ground. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to balance chaos with structure, creating a visual experience that is both raw and carefully considered. It remains a significant example of his late-career output, where his mastery of line and space reached a state of refined intensity.

You might also like

Untitled (Abstract Watercolour) by Sam Francis
Solar Imp by Helen Frankenthaler

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Quattro-stagioni-Part-IV_-Inverno_Poster_CompositorV1_1792126044074.jpg?v=1792211997
