Kano Osanobu, a prominent member of the Kano school during the late Edo period, renders the deity with the refined brushwork characteristic of his lineage. The composition balances the ethereal presence of the Queen Mother against a backdrop of a gnarled pine branch and a rocky outcrop, elements that provide a sense of place while maintaining the flattened, decorative quality typical of the school.

Osanobu employs a delicate colour palette, using soft tones for the robes and subtle washes for the background. The Queen Mother stands in a graceful posture, accompanied by a smaller attendant figure. The architectural detail of the balustrade behind them introduces a geometric structure that contrasts with the organic forms of the pine and the flowing garments of the figures. The ink work on the pine needles demonstrates the technical precision expected of a Kano artist, showing a mastery of brush control that defines the form without excessive ornamentation.

As a work of the Kano school, this piece adheres to the traditional aesthetic values of the period, prioritising clarity of line and a balanced arrangement of subjects. The silk support provides a subtle texture that interacts with the ink and pigment, creating a muted, harmonious effect. This print captures the quiet dignity of the mythological subject, presenting a scene that is both narrative and symbolic. It reflects the enduring interest in Chinese themes within Japanese art, adapted through the specific stylistic lens of the Kano masters who served the shogunate and the aristocracy. The work remains a clear example of the formalised, yet expressive, approach to figure painting that defined the later years of the Kano tradition.

You might also like

Evening Shower - Kano Tan’yū — Kanō Tan'yū
Farming and Herding Buffalo in Summer - Kano Hideyori — Kanō Hideyori

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Queen-Mother-of-the-West_Poster_CompositorV1_1791526670927.jpg?v=1791527048
