The work is executed in black and white chalk on blue paper, a medium favoured by Italian draughtsmen for its ability to capture both form and light through tonal contrast. The figure is rendered with anatomical precision, showing the musculature of the back and shoulder as the subject leans forward. Carracci uses the blue paper as a mid-tone, applying white chalk to define the highlights on the skin and black chalk to deepen the shadows, creating a sense of three-dimensional volume.

As a member of the Bolognese school, Agostino Carracci prioritised the study of the human form from life. This sketch reflects the practice of academic drawing, where artists observed models in specific poses to prepare for larger compositions in painting or printmaking. The lines are deliberate, showing a clear understanding of skeletal structure and muscle tension. The figure is captured in a moment of physical exertion, with the weight distributed across the arms and knees. The economy of the marks indicates a focus on clarity and structural integrity rather than decorative detail. This study provides insight into the working methods of the late sixteenth century, where the mastery of the nude was the primary objective for any artist aiming to produce historical or mythological scenes. The verso of this sheet features a separate study, a head of a wind god, which further illustrates the artist's versatility in handling different subjects and expressions within his preparatory work.

You might also like

Reclining Youth Looking Upwards by Giovanni Lanfranco
Eliëzer en Rebekka by Sebastiano Conca
Agostino Carracci artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Reclining-Male-Nude_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125310655.jpg?v=1792293425
