His work often explores the intersection of human psychology and cosmic space. In Redness of Blue, the artist employs a deep, atmospheric blue ground that suggests an expansive, non-Euclidean environment. Within this field, Matta places geometric and biomorphic forms that appear to float or collide, creating a sense of kinetic energy.

The composition is defined by thin, white, calligraphic lines that map out trajectories or structural frameworks across the canvas. These lines act as conduits for the eye, guiding the viewer through a complex arrangement of yellow, red, and dark shapes. The contrast between the saturated blue background and the bright, primary-coloured elements creates a visual tension. Matta's technique involves layering paint to achieve a sense of depth, moving away from traditional perspective toward a more fluid, multidimensional representation of space.

This piece reflects Matta's interest in the 'inscape', a term he used to describe the internal psychological landscape of the human mind. By avoiding representational imagery, he allows the viewer to engage with the work on a purely sensory and intuitive level. The interplay of sharp, angular lines against softer, nebulous colour fields demonstrates his mastery of spatial dynamics. As a practitioner who bridged the gap between European Surrealism and the burgeoning New York School, Matta maintained a distinct visual language that prioritised movement and the exploration of unseen dimensions. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, preserving the delicate balance between the chaotic arrangement of forms and the structured, linear elements that define the composition.

You might also like

Enigmatic Combat by Arshile Gorky
Fantasy by Mark Rothko

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Redness-of-Blue_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115458205.jpg?v=1792136772
