This etching captures the Road of the Revolt at Neuilly, a location that reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of urban expansion and rural remnants. Raffaëlli often depicted the inhabitants of these liminal spaces, such as ragpickers, labourers, and modest families, rather than the polished boulevards of central Paris.

The composition employs a sparse, open foreground that draws the eye toward the solitary figure in the centre. The use of drypoint and etching allows for a delicate, linear quality, while the application of colour adds a subtle warmth to the scene. The trees, rendered with fine, skeletal lines, frame the view and provide a sense of depth without overwhelming the quiet atmosphere of the street. The buildings in the background appear weathered, suggesting the transient nature of these developing areas during the late nineteenth century.

Raffaëlli was a contemporary of the Impressionists, yet his approach remained grounded in a specific form of social observation. He preferred a muted palette that mirrors the grey, overcast skies often found in the Parisian periphery. This work demonstrates his technical skill in printmaking, particularly in his ability to balance negative space with detailed figures. The print provides a window into a specific moment in French history, documenting the quiet, everyday life of the working class on the edge of a rapidly changing city. The work is a fine example of his dedication to capturing the character of the Parisian suburbs through a lens of objective observation.

You might also like

La Place des Martyrs et la Taverne du Bagne - Félix Hilaire Buhot by Félix Buhot
Rue de la Tonnellerie by Maxime Lalanne
Jean-François Raffaëlli prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Road-of-the-Revolt-at-Neuilly_Poster_CompositorV1_1792110492190.jpg?v=1792302388
