The composition focuses on the rhythmic, stylised movement of ocean waves against a background of gold leaf. Kōrin employs a calligraphic approach to the water, using fluid, sweeping lines to define the crests and troughs of the sea. The contrast between the dark, ink-washed forms of the water and the reflective gold surface creates a sense of depth and atmospheric tension.

This piece demonstrates the Rinpa aesthetic, which prioritises decorative clarity and the integration of natural motifs into a structured, often flattened, pictorial space. Rather than attempting a realistic depiction of the ocean, Kōrin distils the essence of the waves into a series of repeating, graceful curves. The application of gold leaf provides a luminous quality, reacting to the light within a room and shifting the viewer's perception of the space. The work reflects the artist's mastery of ink wash techniques, where the density of the pigment varies to suggest volume and motion without the need for traditional shading.

As a screen painting, the work was designed to function within the architectural context of a Japanese interior. The vertical seam between the panels acts as a subtle interruption, yet the continuous flow of the waves maintains a sense of unity across the surface. This print captures the precise balance of control and spontaneity characteristic of Kōrin's later career. It remains a study in how minimal elements, when arranged with precision, convey the power of nature through a highly refined, graphic language.

You might also like

Waves by Nakamura Hōchū
Gassaku: Mount Fuji by Maruyama Ōkyo

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Rough-Waves_Poster_CompositorV1_1791937655400.jpg?v=1791946828
