round-the-world-sam-francis
Round the World - Sam Francis

A striking abstract lithograph by Sam Francis, featuring his signature use of fluid colour, open space, and gestural marks.

Sam Francis, an American painter associated with the second generation of Abstract Expressionism, developed a unique visual language that bridged the gap between Western gestural abstraction and Eastern aesthetic sensibilities. His work often features expansive fields of colour, punctuated by drips, splatters, and carefully placed voids that invite the viewer to consider the relationship between the painted surface and the surrounding space.

In 'Round the World', Francis employs his characteristic approach to composition, where the edges of the canvas or paper become as active as the centre. The work demonstrates his interest in the luminosity of colour and the physical properties of paint. Rather than filling the entire frame with dense pigment, he allows the white of the paper to breathe, creating a sense of openness and suspension. This technique reflects his time spent in Paris, Tokyo, and California, where he absorbed diverse influences ranging from French Impressionism to Japanese calligraphy.

Francis often worked in series, exploring variations on a theme through different media, including oil, watercolour, and lithography. This print captures the fluid, spontaneous energy that defined his practice. The marks appear to float, suggesting a sense of movement that is both controlled and accidental. By stripping away representational subject matter, Francis focuses entirely on the interaction of hue, light, and gesture. The result is a composition that feels immediate and unforced, inviting a quiet observation of the interplay between form and emptiness. His work remains a primary example of how abstraction can convey a sense of atmosphere and light without relying on traditional perspective or narrative structures.

You might also like

Zone by Philip Guston
Reflections IV by Helen Frankenthaler

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Round-the-World_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119497252.jpg?v=1792196390
