russian-horseman-utagawa-yoshitomi
Russian Horseman - Utagawa Yoshitomi

A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print depicting a Russian horseman, capturing the cultural curiosity of late 19th-century Japan.

This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitomi belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists documented the arrival of foreigners. These prints provided the Japanese public with visual information about the appearance, dress, and customs of visitors from Europe and the Americas.

The subject is a Russian man mounted on a horse. The artist employs the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines common to the Ukiyo-e tradition. The rider wears a dark, structured coat and a cap, reflecting the Western military or diplomatic attire that fascinated Japanese observers at the time. A sword hangs at his side, suggesting his status or official role. The horse is rendered with a stylised muscularity, its coat a warm, reddish-brown tone that contrasts with the rider's dark clothing and the neutral background.

Calligraphic inscriptions surround the figure, typical of the period's print culture, where text and image functioned together to inform the viewer. The red cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the subject as Russian. The print demonstrates the curiosity of the Meiji-era transition, where traditional Japanese artistic techniques were applied to subjects of global encounter. The composition is balanced, focusing on the profile of the horse and rider, a common arrangement in equestrian portraiture of the era. This work serves as a record of the cultural exchange occurring in the treaty ports, capturing a moment of historical curiosity through the lens of traditional Japanese printmaking.

You might also like

Yokkaichi: Mie River - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige
Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō: Inspired by Famous Pictures (Kanagawa) - Utagawa Kunisada — Utagawa Kunisada

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Russian-Horseman_Poster_CompositorV1_1790907865905.jpg?v=1790909587
