The figure stands in a contrapposto stance, holding a large knife, which serves as his traditional attribute representing the method of his martyrdom. Cranach employs a rigorous graphic style, using parallel hatching and cross-hatching to define the folds of the heavy drapery and the texture of the saint's hair and beard. The composition is framed by two slender, stylised trees that curve inward, creating a natural archway that contains the figure.

In the background, a modest landscape features a small town with architectural elements typical of the period. The inclusion of a grape vine on the left side adds a symbolic layer, often associated with the Eucharist in Christian art. Cranach, a central figure in the German Renaissance, produced numerous prints of this nature for a growing market of collectors and religious devotees. His work reflects the technical precision of the era, where the woodblock medium allowed for the dissemination of religious imagery to a wider audience. The lines are clean and deliberate, demonstrating the artist's control over the woodcutting process. The figure of the saint is rendered with a sense of gravity and solemnity, consistent with the devotional purpose of such prints. This piece offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the early sixteenth century, where the balance between human form and symbolic detail remained a primary concern for printmakers. The print remains a representative example of the graphic output from the Cranach workshop, which was highly active in Wittenberg during the Reformation period.

You might also like

Saint Matthias by Sebald Beham
Saint Bartholomew - Monogrammist IA by Master I.
