saint-james-the-greater-lucas-cranach-the-elder
Saint James the Greater - Lucas Cranach the Elder

A detailed woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicting Saint James the Greater, rendered with precise hatching and traditional religious iconography.

This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts Saint James the Greater, a figure identified by his traditional attributes of a pilgrim's staff and a rosary. Cranach, a central figure in the German Renaissance, produced this work during a period when printmaking allowed for the wider dissemination of religious imagery. The composition follows the conventions of the time, placing the saint in a standing position, framed by stylised foliage that suggests a natural setting while maintaining a decorative quality.

The artist employs a rigorous system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the folds of the saint's heavy garments. These lines create a sense of volume and texture, contrasting with the more delicate rendering of the facial features and the hands. The figure wears a wide-brimmed hat, a common accessory for pilgrims, and his expression is one of quiet contemplation. The background includes a small, simplified landscape element, typical of Cranach's graphic work, which provides context without distracting from the primary subject.

Cranach's approach to the woodcut medium is characterised by a balance between linear precision and expressive form. The lines are deliberate, serving to outline the figure clearly against the neutral ground. This print reflects the technical mastery of the period, where the woodblock cutter worked in close collaboration with the artist to translate drawings into reproducible images. The work is an example of the devotional prints that circulated in early sixteenth-century Europe, intended for both private reflection and public display. The clarity of the composition and the attention to detail in the drapery demonstrate the artist's ability to imbue a traditional subject with a distinct visual character. This print remains a representative example of the graphic output from the Cranach workshop, which was highly active in Wittenberg during the Reformation era.

You might also like

Saint Coloman as a Pilgrim by Albrecht Dürer
Saint James the Lesser - Sebald Beham by Hans Sebald Beham
Lucas Cranach the Elder prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Saint-James-the-Greater_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119270160.jpg?v=1792397488
