saint-john-the-evangelist-lucas-cranach-the-elder
Saint John the Evangelist - Lucas Cranach the Elder

A classic woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder, depicting Saint John the Evangelist with his traditional attribute of the poisoned chalice.

This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts Saint John the Evangelist, a frequent subject in Northern Renaissance art. The composition features the saint holding a chalice, from which a small dragon or serpent emerges, referencing the legend of the poisoned cup. Cranach employs a distinct graphic language, using bold, rhythmic lines to define the heavy folds of the saint's drapery. The figure stands between two stylised trees, which support baskets of fruit or floral arrangements, creating a balanced, symmetrical frame typical of the period's printmaking.

The background reveals a modest, simplified landscape with a small building, providing a sense of spatial depth without distracting from the primary figure. Cranach's approach to line work is both functional and decorative, with the hatching patterns creating volume and shadow across the saint's robes. The inclusion of the artist's signature or mark on the left side confirms the work's origin within his busy Wittenberg workshop. This print demonstrates the technical skill required for early sixteenth-century woodblock production, where every mark must be carefully carved in relief.

As a master of the German Renaissance, Cranach produced numerous prints for both religious and secular audiences. This particular work reflects the stylistic conventions of the time, where religious figures were often presented with a blend of humanised features and symbolic attributes. The print captures the saint in a moment of quiet contemplation, his gaze directed toward the chalice. The overall aesthetic is one of clarity and precision, characteristic of the woodcut medium as it developed in the early 1500s. This fine art print offers a clear view of the original block's texture and the artist's hand, suitable for those interested in the history of printmaking and the visual culture of the Reformation era.

<p style="font-size:0.85rem;color:#888;font-weight:600;margin:0 0
