This work depicts Saint Margaret of Cortona, a Franciscan tertiary, in a moment of spiritual contemplation. She is shown in her habit, holding a crucifix, while an angel stands to her left, offering a crown of thorns. A small child, likely representing her son, stands before her, and a dog rests at their feet. In the background, a shadowy, demonic figure is visible, representing the temptations she overcame during her life of penance.

Traversi employs a tenebrist approach, where the figures emerge from a dark, atmospheric space. The contrast between the illuminated faces of the saint and the angel against the murky background creates a sense of psychological tension. The composition is structured to guide the viewer through the narrative elements, from the saint's weary expression to the symbolic objects she holds. The artist captures the texture of the fabrics and the subtle play of light on skin with precision, demonstrating his technical skill in rendering form. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on grand, idealized religious scenes, Traversi often brought a grounded, human quality to his subjects. This painting reflects his interest in the emotional state of his figures, presenting the saint not as an untouchable icon, but as a person experiencing a difficult spiritual struggle. The inclusion of the demonic figure adds a layer of narrative complexity, suggesting the constant presence of conflict in her path to holiness. The work remains a fine example of the late Baroque style in Italy, combining theatrical lighting with a focus on human emotion.

You might also like

The Resurrection of Lazarus by Caravaggio
Adoration of the Shepherds by Bernardo Cavallino
More by Gaspare Traversi →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Saint-Margaret-of-Cortona_Poster_CompositorV1_1792126119008.jpg?v=1792212385
