saint-matthew-lucas-cranach-the-elder
Saint Matthew - Lucas Cranach the Elder

A detailed woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicting Saint Matthew, rendered with the bold lines and decorative framing characteristic of the Northern Renaissance.

This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts Saint Matthew, one of the twelve apostles. The figure is shown in profile, engaged with a large book held in his hands. Cranach employs the characteristic graphic language of the early sixteenth-century German print tradition, using bold, rhythmic lines to define the heavy folds of the saint's robes and the texture of his beard. The composition is framed by stylised, scrolling foliage that anchors the figure within the pictorial space, while a small, distant town is visible in the lower right corner, providing a sense of scale and setting.

Cranach was a central figure in the artistic life of Wittenberg, and his work often reflects the theological and cultural shifts of the Reformation era. His prints were produced in significant numbers, allowing his visual style to reach a wide audience beyond the courtly circles he served. The technical execution of this woodcut demonstrates the precision required by the medium, where every mark must be carefully carved into the woodblock to ensure clarity during the printing process. The contrast between the dark, dense areas of the drapery and the lighter, more open sections creates a balance that directs the viewer's attention to the saint's focused expression and his interaction with the text.

This print is an example of the devotional imagery produced in the German lands during the Renaissance. It serves as a record of the period's graphic techniques and the iconographic conventions used to represent biblical figures. The work remains a clear representation of Cranach's ability to combine narrative detail with a decorative sensibility, typical of his output during his most active years in Saxony. The print captures the intersection of religious devotion and the technical mastery of the woodcut medium that defined much of the artist's career.

You might also like

Christ on the Cross by Albrecht Dürer
Saint Jerome in the Desert by Hans Baldung Grien
Lucas Cranach the Elder artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Saint-Matthew_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125553399.jpg?v=1792295863
