saint-matthias-lucas-cranach-the-elder
Saint Matthias - Lucas Cranach the Elder

A detailed woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder, depicting Saint Matthias with his traditional attribute, the halberd, rendered in the distinct style of the German Renaissance.

This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts Saint Matthias, one of the twelve apostles. Cranach, a central figure in the German Renaissance, produced this work during a period when the woodcut medium was reaching a high level of technical sophistication. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the saint, who is shown holding a halberd, the instrument associated with his martyrdom.

The figure of the saint occupies the centre of the frame, draped in heavy, voluminous robes. Cranach uses a series of parallel and cross-hatched lines to define the folds of the fabric, creating a sense of weight and volume. The saint is flanked by two stylised, vertical plant forms that frame the scene, a common decorative device in early sixteenth-century German prints. In the lower right corner, a small, distant townscape provides a sense of scale and spatial depth, contrasting with the monumental presence of the apostle.

Cranach's line work is precise and controlled. The artist balances the stark black ink against the negative space of the paper, ensuring that the figure remains clear and legible. The halo, rendered as a simple, unadorned circle, sits behind the head of the saint, reinforcing his status without distracting from the graphic quality of the print. This work demonstrates the technical skill required to carve such detail into a woodblock, a process that demanded foresight and steady hands. As a piece of religious art, it reflects the visual culture of the period, where such prints were widely circulated to provide devotional imagery to a broader audience. The print remains a clear example of the graphic style that defined Cranach's output during his time in Wittenberg, where he worked closely with the leading intellectual and religious figures of the era.

You might also like

St. Jerome in the Wilderness by Hans Baldung Grien
Saint Matthias by Sebald Beham
More by Lucas Cranach the Elder →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Saint-Matthias_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125579942.jpg?v=1792296313
