saint-simon-lucas-cranach-the-elder
Saint Simon - Lucas Cranach the Elder

A classic woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicting Saint Simon with his traditional attribute, the saw, framed by stylized trees.

This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts Saint Simon, one of the twelve apostles. The figure stands in a frontal pose, holding a large saw, which serves as his traditional iconographic attribute. Cranach employs a clear, graphic style typical of early sixteenth-century German printmaking. The lines are firm and descriptive, defining the heavy folds of the saint's robes and the texture of his beard with precision.

The composition is framed by two slender, stylized trees that curve inward at the top, creating a natural arch around the figure. This framing device provides a sense of enclosure while maintaining a shallow pictorial space. In the background, small, simplified topographical elements suggest a rural setting, consistent with the period's approach to integrating figures into their environment. The artist's monogram, the winged serpent, is absent here, though the signature 'Lucas Cranach' appears in the upper right quadrant.

Cranach was a central figure in the German Renaissance, known for his prolific output in both painting and printmaking. His work often reflects the theological and cultural shifts of the Reformation era. This print belongs to a series of the apostles, a common subject for devotional prints intended for a wider audience. The stark contrast of the black ink against the paper surface emphasises the linear quality of the work, allowing the viewer to focus on the expressive features of the saint. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of the artist in managing the woodblock medium to achieve varied tonal effects through hatching and cross-hatching. It remains a representative example of the graphic arts produced in Wittenberg during the early sixteenth century.

You might also like

Saint Simon by Martin Schongauer
Saint Philip by Albrecht Dürer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Saint-Simon_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124417227.jpg?v=1792295600
