The composition is organised around the central event: the saint kneels in prayer, his hands clasped, while a small child rises from the ground. The scene is set within a contemporary Florentine square, populated by a crowd of onlookers dressed in the fashion of the fifteenth century. The architecture in the background provides a sense of place, grounding the miraculous event in a recognisable urban environment.

Benozzo Gozzoli, a pupil of Fra Angelico, demonstrates his characteristic attention to detail and narrative clarity. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, allowing each character to be observed individually. The colour palette is bright and clear, typical of tempera painting from this period. The drapery of the garments is rendered with precision, showing the influence of the International Gothic style that persisted in Gozzoli's work alongside the emerging Renaissance interest in human anatomy and perspective.

This work was originally part of a larger predella, likely commissioned for an altarpiece dedicated to the saint. The narrative focus is on the emotional response of the witnesses, whose gestures and expressions convey surprise and devotion. The inclusion of the cross-bearer and the varied attire of the crowd suggests a social hierarchy, reflecting the civic pride of the Florentine Republic. The painting remains a fine example of the storytelling tradition in Italian art, where religious subjects were brought into the contemporary world of the viewer through careful observation and decorative refinement.

You might also like

The Story of St. Nicholas: St. Nicholas Saves the Ship (Detail) by Fra Angelico
Saint Nicholas Resuscitating Three Youths by Bicci di Lorenzo
More by Benozzo Gozzoli →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Saint-Zenobius-Resuscitating-a-Dead-Child_Poster_CompositorV1_1792110660273.jpg?v=1792302728
