Masanobu, also known as Santō Kyōden, was a prominent figure in the Edo period, active as both a writer of popular fiction and a designer of ukiyo-e prints. This specific page demonstrates the integration of text and image typical of the period's literary culture.

The composition features a handprint on the right page, rendered with a direct, gestural quality. The ink application suggests a physical impression, creating a stark contrast against the aged paper. To the left, the text is written in a fluid, cursive script. The characters are arranged in vertical columns, maintaining a balance between the density of the calligraphy and the negative space surrounding the handprint.

Kitao Masanobu was a student of Kitao Shigemasa and became a master in his own right. His work often reflects the wit and urban culture of Edo. This print is an example of the 'kibyōshi' or 'yellow-cover' genre, which combined satirical narratives with illustrations. The inclusion of a handprint serves as a visual record, perhaps intended to document a specific individual or to add a layer of authenticity to the text. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, off-white tone that provides a neutral background for the black ink. The print captures a moment of historical documentation, where the personal mark of a hand meets the formal structure of printed literature. It offers a glimpse into the diverse output of an artist who navigated the worlds of commercial publishing and fine art with equal facility.

You might also like

Evening Glow at Ryogoku Bridge - Keisai Eisen — Keisai Eisen
Bamboo Quay by Kyōbashi Bridge - Utagawa Hiroshige — Utagawa Hiroshige

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Santoan-s-Chats_-Short-Records-Written-upon-His-Waking_Poster_CompositorV1_1791273089255.jpg?v=1791273405
https://www.solisprints.com/products/santoans-chats-short-records-written-upon-his-waking-kitao-masanobu
