Escher, featuring a witch on a broomstick integrated with bold typography.

This graphic work by M.C. Escher serves as the cover design for the book 'De Vreeselijke Avonturen van Scholastica' (The Terrible Adventures of Scholastica), written by Jan Walch. Produced in 1933, the piece demonstrates the artist's early mastery of the woodcut medium, a technique he favoured for its ability to produce sharp, high-contrast imagery. The composition integrates typography with a central figure, a witch mounted on a broomstick, rendered in a stark, silhouette-like manner.

Escher employs a bold, graphic approach here, where the text and the illustration occupy the same visual plane. The letters of the title are arranged to accommodate the form of the witch, creating a cohesive unit where language and image are inseparable. This method reflects the influence of Art Deco and contemporary book illustration styles of the early twentieth century. The figure of the witch is depicted with flowing hair and a dynamic posture, suggesting movement against the static nature of the printed text.

Unlike his later, more famous mathematical tessellations or impossible constructions, this work focuses on narrative illustration and the functional requirements of a book jacket. The stark black-and-white palette is characteristic of his woodcut practice, where the artist carved away the negative space to leave the primary forms in relief. The result is a clean, legible design that communicates the subject matter through simplified shapes and clear lines. This print offers a glimpse into Escher's professional work as a graphic designer before he became fully occupied with his explorations of geometry and perspective. It remains a clear example of his technical precision and his ability to balance complex visual elements within a restricted format.

You might also like

Bookplate B.G.
