It is an etching that reinterprets the figures of Adam and Eve from Lucas Cranach the Elder's sixteenth-century paintings. Duchamp strips away the original painterly detail, the lush foliage, and the symbolic animals, leaving only the bare outlines of the two figures. The reduction of the composition to simple, clean lines reflects his interest in the conceptual nature of art rather than its traditional aesthetic execution.

The figures retain the poses found in Cranach's work, yet they exist in a void, removed from their original narrative context. By isolating these forms, Duchamp invites the viewer to consider the history of the image and the act of appropriation. The work functions as a dialogue between the Renaissance master and the twentieth-century avant-garde. The sparse, almost skeletal quality of the drawing emphasises the physical form while simultaneously questioning the necessity of artistic ornamentation.

This print is a fine example of Duchamp's late-career focus on the reproduction and recontextualisation of existing imagery. It is not a copy in the traditional sense, but a distillation of form. The lines are precise and economical, demonstrating a deliberate restraint. The work invites an examination of how art history is consumed and repurposed. It remains a clear, direct statement on the nature of authorship and the persistence of classical motifs within modern practice. The simplicity of the composition allows the viewer to focus on the relationship between the two figures, now detached from their theological origins and presented as pure graphic elements on the page.

<p style="font-size:0.85rem;color:#888;font-weight:600;margin:0 0
