This work belongs to a series of etchings that revisit the classical draughtsmanship of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. By isolating specific figures from Ingres's compositions, Duchamp engages in a process of appropriation and recontextualisation. The image depicts a pair of figures, rendered with a sparse, economical line that strips away the academic finish of the original source material.

Duchamp, known for his conceptual approach to art, uses this series to examine the nature of reproduction and the status of the artist. The lines are thin and deliberate, focusing on the contours of the bodies rather than anatomical volume or shading. This reductionist technique shifts the viewer's attention from the narrative content of the original painting to the act of tracing and selection itself. The work functions as a meditation on the history of art, where the artist acts as an editor of existing visual culture.

The composition is notably flat, lacking the depth associated with traditional figurative studies. By removing the figures from their original context, Duchamp creates a sense of ambiguity. The figures appear detached, existing in a void that emphasises the simplicity of the mark-making. This print offers a glimpse into the later period of Duchamp's career, where he continued to question the boundaries between original creation and mechanical reproduction. It is a quiet, understated piece that invites close inspection of the line quality and the deliberate choice of subject matter. The work remains a significant example of how Duchamp utilised historical references to challenge conventional notions of authorship and artistic originality.

You might also like

Night by Henri Matisse
Seated Woman in Corset and Boots by Egon Schiele

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Selected-Details-after-Ingres-II_Poster_CompositorV1_1792003623041.jpg?v=1792107945
