self-portrait-kathe-kollwitz
Self-Portrait - Käthe Kollwitz

A powerful, intimate lithographic self-portrait by Käthe Kollwitz, capturing the artist with raw honesty and masterful tonal control.

Käthe Kollwitz produced numerous self-portraits throughout her career, using her own likeness to document the passage of time and the weight of personal experience. This specific work captures the artist in her later years, rendered with a directness that avoids idealisation. The composition focuses entirely on the head, allowing the viewer to engage with the textures of the skin and the gravity of her expression.

Kollwitz utilised the medium of lithography to achieve a range of tonal values, from the deep, dense blacks of the eyes and brows to the soft, diffused grey of the forehead and cheek. The application of the medium suggests a tactile process, where the artist worked the surface to create volume and shadow. Her gaze is steady, directed slightly away from the viewer, suggesting a moment of internal reflection rather than a performance for an audience.

This print demonstrates the artist's ability to convey psychological weight through minimal means. By stripping away background detail and extraneous elements, she forces a confrontation with the subject. The lines around the eyes and mouth are rendered with economy, yet they communicate a sense of weariness and resilience. As a practitioner of German Expressionism, Kollwitz often focused on themes of suffering, poverty, and mortality. In this self-portrait, those themes are internalised, presented through the physical reality of her own face. The work remains a primary example of her technical skill in printmaking, specifically her mastery of light and shadow to define form. It is a stark, honest representation that prioritises emotional truth over aesthetic polish, consistent with her broader body of work which frequently addressed the human condition with unflinching clarity.

You might also like

Youth Reading by Ernst Barlach
Zelfportret (Self-Portrait) by Johannes Jelgerhuis

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-Portrait_Poster_CompositorV1_1792302466382.jpg?v=1792302677
