De Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist and teacher, known for his woodcuts and drawings that often feature a distinct, linear clarity. In this work, the artist presents himself with a direct, unadorned gaze. The composition is centred, focusing on the facial features rendered with fine, precise ink strokes. The use of watercolour is restrained, providing soft tonal washes that define the hat and jacket without overwhelming the graphic quality of the drawing.

The artist's technique relies on a balance between observation and stylisation. The spectacles, the moustache, and the texture of the suit are captured through a series of rhythmic, controlled marks. This approach reflects his broader practice, which frequently engaged with the possibilities of printmaking and graphic design. The muted palette, dominated by earthy tones and soft greys, aligns with the understated nature of the subject. By avoiding excessive detail, de Mesquita allows the viewer to focus on the psychological presence of the sitter.

De Mesquita was a significant figure in the Dutch art scene, teaching at the School of Applied Arts in Haarlem and influencing many younger artists, including M.C. Escher. His work often displays a blend of decorative sensibility and psychological observation. This portrait is a clear example of his ability to convey character through minimal means. The work is presented on a neutral ground, which enhances the graphic quality of the ink lines. It remains a representative example of his mid-career style, showing his mastery of drawing as a primary medium for portraiture.

You might also like

Double self-portrait in a bowler hat by Jean Dubuffet
Self Portrait by Giorgio de Chirico

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-Portrait_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120269293.jpg?v=1792398504
