The work presents the artist in a confrontational, direct manner, his face rendered in a stark, unnatural red that separates him from the surrounding figures. Behind him, a skeletal figure of Death looms, its presence both literal and symbolic, reflecting the anxieties prevalent in post-First World War Germany.

The composition is tight and claustrophobic. Pechstein employs the characteristic Expressionist palette of high-contrast, non-naturalistic colours to convey psychological tension. The brushwork is aggressive and visible, rejecting academic polish in favour of raw emotional expression. To the left, a female figure with a cigarette adds a layer of worldly decadence, creating a triangular tension between the artist, the spectre of mortality, and the distractions of modern life. The dark, murky background pushes the figures forward, forcing the viewer to engage with the artist's gaze.

This painting captures the disillusionment and existential questioning that defined much of the art produced in the Weimar Republic. Pechstein uses the memento mori motif not as a traditional religious warning, but as a personal reflection on the fragility of life following the trauma of global conflict. The distortion of facial features and the heavy, dark outlines are typical of his mature style, which sought to communicate internal states rather than objective reality. By placing himself in such close proximity to the personification of death, Pechstein invites an examination of the artist's role in a society grappling with its own mortality and moral decay.

You might also like

Woman with a Bag by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff
Self-Portrait by Emil Nolde
Max Pechstein artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-Portrait-with-Death_Poster_CompositorV1_1792128980225.jpg?v=1792298007
