The composition features the artist at the centre, surrounded by a dense crowd of grotesque masks. These objects were a recurring motif in his work, often sourced from his family's souvenir shop in Ostend. The masks serve to obscure the identities of the figures, creating a sense of alienation and social critique. Ensor uses a thick, impasto application of paint, which gives the surface a tactile quality. The palette is dominated by warm tones, including reds, oranges, and yellows, which contrast with the paler, more ghostly visages of the surrounding masks.

Unlike traditional portraiture, which seeks to capture the likeness or character of the subject, this painting focuses on the performative nature of identity. The artist appears as a singular, recognisable figure amidst a sea of artificiality. The chaotic arrangement of the faces creates a claustrophobic atmosphere, suggesting a commentary on the hypocrisy of bourgeois society. Ensor often used such imagery to express his own feelings of isolation and his disdain for the art establishment of his time. The work remains a significant example of his ability to blend reality with the macabre, using the carnival aesthetic to explore psychological themes. The lack of clear spatial depth forces the viewer to confront the faces directly, making the experience of viewing the painting both confrontational and unsettling. By placing himself within this crowd, Ensor invites the viewer to question the boundary between the authentic self and the social persona.

You might also like

Knight Errant (Self-Portrait) by Oskar Kokoschka
Self-portrait by Walter Gramatté

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Self-Portrait-with-Masks_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117648101.jpg?v=1792140910
