The work captures the harbour at Tréport, a coastal commune in Normandy. Prendergast demonstrates his early mastery of the medium, employing a fluid application of pigment to define the hulls of the fishing vessels and their masts against the tidal flats.

The composition focuses on the interplay between the grounded boats and the reflective surface of the water. Prendergast uses a palette of muted ochres, browns, and soft blues to convey the atmospheric conditions of the French coast. The figures on the boats are rendered with economy, suggesting their presence through simple, gestural marks rather than detailed portraiture. This approach reflects the influence of the Nabis group and the broader Post-Impressionist interest in decorative surface patterns over strict realism.

Unlike his later, more mosaic-like oil paintings, this watercolour retains a sense of immediacy. The paper remains visible in several areas, allowing the white ground to contribute to the luminosity of the scene. The masts create a rhythmic verticality that contrasts with the horizontal expanse of the harbour floor. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's development as he moved away from traditional academic techniques toward a more personal, modern aesthetic. It remains a representative example of his travel-inspired studies, which documented the daily life of European ports with a focus on colour and light rather than narrative detail. The work is signed and dated in the lower left corner, confirming its origin during his initial period of study in Paris and the French provinces.

You might also like

Bretania Port by Iosif Iser
Two Masted Schooner, Concarneau by Robert Henri

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Small-Fishing-Boats-Treport-France_Poster_CompositorV1_1792116024717.jpg?v=1792137549
