Ribera, a Spanish artist who spent much of his career in Italy, was known for his mastery of the etching medium and his interest in the human form. This work belongs to a series of prints where the artist explored physiognomy and the depiction of the elderly or the unusual.

The composition focuses on the profile, allowing the viewer to observe the sharp lines of the nose, the furrowed brow, and the texture of the subject's hair, which is partially covered by a simple cloth wrap. Ribera uses a variety of hatching techniques to create depth and shadow, particularly around the eye socket and the neck. The lines are precise, demonstrating his technical control over the copper plate. The subject wears a simple garment with a ruffled collar, suggesting a modest social standing.

Unlike his larger religious paintings, which often feature dramatic lighting and heavy impasto, this print relies on the economy of line. The artist avoids unnecessary detail, choosing instead to define the character of the face through careful shading and contouring. The signature and date are visible in the lower right corner, typical of his printmaking practice during his time in Naples. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's private study of human expression, removed from the formal requirements of ecclesiastical or aristocratic commissions. It remains a clear example of the seventeenth-century interest in character studies, where the artist sought to capture the specificities of human age and appearance through the medium of print.

You might also like

Elderly Man Reading a Book by Nicolas Lagneau
Bust of a Man and a Woman by Antoon Overlaet
Jusepe de Ribera prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Small-Grotesque-Head_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115490985.jpg?v=1792395366
