small-portrait-of-luzhu-gai-qi
Small Portrait of Luzhu - Gai Qi

A refined figure painting by Gai Qi, depicting the legendary Luzhu with delicate brushwork and traditional calligraphic inscriptions.

Gai Qi was a prominent painter and poet during the Qing Dynasty, active in the region of Shanghai. He is recognised for his refined depictions of women, a genre known as meiren hua. This work, Small Portrait of Luzhu, depicts the legendary figure Luzhu, a concubine of the official Shi Chong. The composition follows the traditional format of a hanging scroll, where the central figure is surrounded by extensive calligraphic inscriptions. These texts provide historical and literary context, connecting the visual representation to the cultural narratives surrounding the subject.

The figure of Luzhu is rendered with delicate, controlled brushwork. Her posture is graceful, and her garments are depicted with soft, flowing lines that suggest the texture of silk. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones to maintain a sense of elegance and composure. Gai Qi employs a technique that emphasises the linear quality of the form, a hallmark of his approach to figure painting. The surrounding calligraphy, written by the artist and his contemporaries, creates a dialogue between the visual image and the written word, a common practice in traditional Chinese art. The balance between the negative space of the paper and the density of the ink creates a harmonious composition.

This print captures the subtle details of the original, from the fine lines of the facial features to the intricate patterns on the robes. It offers a view into the aesthetic values of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in China, where the depiction of historical beauties served as a medium for artistic expression and literary reflection. The work remains a representative example of Gai Qi's ability to combine technical precision with a sense of quiet narrative, providing a window into the scholarly and artistic circles of his time.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Legendary Beauties through the Ages - Qiu Ying — Qiu Ying

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Small-Portrait-of-Luzhu_Poster_CompositorV1_1790808102395.jpg?v=1790809181
