Initially known for his representational work, he shifted towards abstraction in the late 1940s, a move that defined his later career. This piece, Spiral Development in Green, Violet, Blue & Gold, reflects his interest in the relationship between geometric order and organic movement.

The composition is structured around rhythmic, swirling lines that suggest a sense of kinetic energy. Pasmore employs a series of concentric spirals and linear patterns that guide the eye across the surface. The use of colour is deliberate, with cool blues and greens balanced by warmer gold tones and deep violet accents. These hues create a sense of depth, despite the essentially flat, two-dimensional nature of the design.

Central to the work is the interplay between the dense, patterned areas and the open, negative space. The inclusion of distinct, enclosed shapes provides a counterpoint to the fluid, repetitive lines. This tension between the structured and the spontaneous is a hallmark of Pasmore's approach during this period. His work often sought to reconcile the rational principles of construction with the intuitive nature of artistic expression. By focusing on the fundamental elements of line, shape, and colour, Pasmore invites the viewer to engage with the visual mechanics of the painting itself, rather than searching for a representational subject. This print captures the precision of his brushwork and the clarity of his vision, offering a clear example of his contribution to the evolution of modern British painting.

You might also like

Blue Drop by Alexander Calder
Min-Oe by Cy Twombly

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Spiral-Development-in-Green-Violet-Blue-Gold_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124113519.jpg?v=1792210297
