It demonstrates his initial engagement with traditional academic subjects and the influence of Dutch and Spanish masters. The composition features a collection of leather-bound books, a brass candlestick, and a newspaper spread across a table covered with a patterned cloth. The dark, moody background creates a sense of enclosure, forcing the viewer to focus on the textures of the objects.

Matisse employs a restrained palette, relying on deep browns, muted reds, and the metallic sheen of the brass to define the space. The brushwork is controlled and precise, reflecting his formal training at the Académie Julian in Paris. Unlike his later, more experimental works, this piece adheres to a conventional approach to light and shadow. The candle, though unlit, provides a vertical axis that balances the horizontal arrangement of the books. The inclusion of the newspaper, with its legible text, adds a layer of contemporary detail to the otherwise timeless arrangement of domestic items.

This painting offers a glimpse into the formative years of an artist who would eventually revolutionise the use of colour and form in the twentieth century. It shows a young painter mastering the fundamentals of composition and tonal values before moving toward the expressive abstraction that defined his later career. The work remains a study in quiet observation, capturing a moment of stillness within a domestic setting. Its technical execution reveals a disciplined hand, far removed from the spontaneous, liberated style he developed in the following decade. Collectors of early modern art will appreciate this rare look at the traditional roots of a master.

You might also like

Still Life with Commode by Paul Cézanne
Still Life with Flowers by Victor Borisov-Musatov

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Still-Life-with-Books-and-Candle_Poster_CompositorV1_1791962028739.jpg?v=1791962433
