This early modernist work uses heavy brushwork and an earthy palette to explore form and volume.

Max Weber painted this still life in 1909, shortly after his return to New York from Paris. During his time in Europe, Weber studied with Henri Matisse and became acquainted with the work of Paul Cézanne. These influences are evident in the structured composition and the use of heavy, expressive brushstrokes. The painting features three red bananas, two apples, and a cylindrical ceramic jar arranged on a table. The objects are grouped closely together, creating a sense of physical weight and density.

The colour palette is dominated by earthy tones. Deep browns and ochres form the background, while the fruit provides muted accents of terracotta red and pale yellow. Weber avoids traditional naturalism in favour of a more tactile approach. The paint is applied thickly, which gives the surface a textured quality. Dark outlines around the fruit and the jar suggest a move towards the simplified forms that would later define his cubist period. The lighting is directional, casting soft shadows that define the rounded shapes of the apples and bananas.

This work represents a specific moment in American art history when European modernist techniques began to take root in the United States. Weber was one of the first American artists to fully engage with the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century. In this piece, he focuses on the volume of everyday items rather than their fine details. The arrangement is compact and stable. The vertical lines of the background provide a sense of architectural order to the domestic scene. This painting demonstrates Weber's interest in the structural properties of objects, a theme he explored throughout his career.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Portrait of Charles I of England - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Still-Life-with-Red-Bananas_Poster_CompositorV1_1780445884493.jpg?v=1791855920
