This work is a composite portrait, where the human form is constructed entirely from seasonal produce. The profile of the figure is composed of fruits, vegetables, and grains harvested during the summer months. A cucumber forms the nose, a peach serves as the cheek, and an ear of corn acts as the ear. The clothing is rendered in woven straw, with the artist's signature and the date subtly integrated into the collar.

Arcimboldo served the Habsburg court in Vienna and Prague, where his imaginative style found favour among the nobility. These paintings were not merely decorative: they functioned as intellectual puzzles, reflecting the Renaissance interest in natural history, botany, and the classification of the physical world. The dark, neutral background ensures the focus remains on the assembly of organic elements, which are painted with precise attention to texture and form.

This piece demonstrates the Mannerist tendency towards artifice and visual wit. By arranging disparate natural objects to mimic the human anatomy, Arcimboldo creates a tension between the recognisable portrait and the underlying botanical components. The work invites close inspection, as the viewer identifies individual cherries, plums, and wheat stalks that constitute the figure. It remains a primary example of the artist's unique approach to portraiture, blending scientific observation with creative invention. The print captures the fine details of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal shifts and the specific character of each fruit and vegetable depicted in the composition.

You might also like

Lucrezia Panciatichi by Agnolo Bronzino
Lady with a Basket of Spindles by Jacopo Pontormo

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Summer_Poster_CompositorV1_1792108737624.jpg?v=1792132780
