Created in 1922, this print captures the atmospheric conditions of the Isles of Shoals, a location off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine that Hassam visited frequently throughout his career. The composition focuses on the interplay between the setting sun and the expansive sky above the Atlantic Ocean.

Hassam employs a series of fine, directional lines to construct the cloud formations. These marks suggest the movement of air and the fading light of the day. The sun is positioned near the horizon, its rays radiating outwards through the clouds. Below, the water is rendered with horizontal strokes that convey a sense of stillness, broken only by the reflection of the sun and a small, distant silhouette of a boat. The artist uses the drypoint technique to add texture and depth to the darker areas of the sky, creating a contrast with the lighter, more open sections of the horizon.

This work demonstrates Hassam's technical proficiency in printmaking, a medium he returned to with renewed interest during the later stages of his career. By stripping away colour, he relies entirely on the density of his lines and the quality of the ink to define the mood. The print reflects his interest in the transient effects of light and weather, themes that occupied much of his painting practice. The minimalist approach to the subject matter allows the viewer to focus on the rhythmic quality of the etched lines and the quietude of the coastal scene. It is a study of light and atmosphere, executed with a focus on the physical properties of the copper plate and the paper.

You might also like

Seascape by Jacob Maris
The Sea by Firmin Baes

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Sundown-Appledore_Poster_CompositorV1_1792129628279.jpg?v=1792294385
