sunrise-francis-picabia
Sunrise - Francis Picabia

A striking example of Francis Picabia's later work, featuring a semi-abstract figure set against a backdrop of rhythmic, graphic patterns.

Francis Picabia produced this work during his later period, a time marked by a departure from his earlier Dadaist and Surrealist experiments. The composition displays a central, semi-abstract figure rendered with bold, graphic lines and a high-contrast palette. The figure is surrounded by rhythmic, decorative patterns that suggest a departure from traditional representation. Picabia employs a variety of marks, including stippling, diagonal hatching, and solid blocks of colour, to create a sense of movement across the surface.

The figure itself is ambiguous, with a mask-like face that recalls the artist's interest in primitive art and popular culture. The surrounding environment is flattened, with the background composed of repetitive, almost mechanical motifs. This approach reflects the artist's rejection of fixed stylistic categories. By the early 1940s, Picabia had moved away from the machine aesthetic of his earlier years, opting instead for a more personal, often provocative style that combined classical references with a modern, fragmented sensibility.

This print captures the energy of the original oil painting, preserving the stark juxtaposition of the orange, blue, and black tones. The work functions as a study in visual rhythm, where the distinction between the subject and the background is intentionally blurred. It is an example of the artist's late-career output, which often challenged the expectations of his contemporaries. The composition remains balanced despite the density of the decorative elements, demonstrating Picabia's control over complex, multi-layered imagery. This piece is suitable for those interested in the transition between early twentieth-century avant-garde movements and the more subjective, expressive styles that followed.

You might also like

Dialogue by Constantin Blendea
Untitled (Reclining Figure) by Ion Alin Gheorghiu
Francis Picabia prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Sunrise_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125838539.jpg?v=1792209236
