The work displays the characteristic precision and sculptural quality found in her mature period. Lempicka combines the classical subject of the bather with a modern, stylised approach to form and light. The figure of Suzanne is rendered with smooth, polished surfaces, reflecting the artist's interest in the aesthetic of machine-age clarity. Her skin tones are modelled with a subtle gradation of light and shadow, creating a sense of volume that contrasts with the darker, more schematic treatment of the surrounding foliage.

The composition is tightly framed, focusing attention on the subject's posture. The inclusion of the white cloth, with its simple red stripe, provides a textural contrast to the softness of the skin. Lempicka's technique involves a controlled application of paint, resulting in a surface that appears almost metallic or porcelain-like. This approach removes the spontaneity often associated with traditional oil painting, replacing it with a calculated, deliberate finish. The background, composed of dark, stylised trees, acts as a foil to the illuminated figure, pushing the subject forward into the viewer's space. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise Renaissance influences with the sleek, geometric sensibilities of the 1930s. The result is a figure that feels both timeless and distinctly of its era, capturing the glamour and artifice associated with Lempicka's career in Paris and beyond.

You might also like

Nude Portrait of Arletty by Moïse Kisling
Nude's Back by Henri Matisse

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Suzanne-Bathing_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120213820.jpg?v=1792199356
