The piece depicts the formal architecture of Prospect Park, specifically the terrace area designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Chase employs pastel to record the interplay of light and shadow across the stone balustrades and the paved ground.

The composition relies on the contrast between the structured, geometric lines of the terrace and the loose, atmospheric treatment of the foliage above. Chase uses short, rapid strokes to suggest the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, a technique characteristic of his interest in the transient effects of light. The colour palette remains grounded in earthy tones for the path, punctuated by the bright greens of the canopy and the warm reds of the floral borders.

Chase was a proponent of the pastel medium, often using it for finished works rather than mere preparatory sketches. His ability to manipulate the chalk allows for a soft, diffused quality that suits the subject of a public park. The work avoids rigid detail, opting instead for an impressionistic focus on mood and atmosphere. By capturing the quietude of the terrace, Chase provides a view of late nineteenth-century urban leisure. The signature in the lower left corner confirms his hand, reflecting his practice of signing works intended for exhibition or sale. This print captures the texture of the original pastel, preserving the layered application of pigment and the specific tonal balance achieved by the artist.

You might also like

Park Landscape in the Palatinate by Max Slevogt
Late Afternoon Giverny by Guy Rose

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Terrace-Prospect-Park_Poster_CompositorV1_1791926588367.jpg?v=1791940298
