His travels to Algeria provided the primary source material for his body of work, which often focused on the intersection of human activity and the expansive desert environment. In this composition, Fromentin captures a mounted falconer in motion, his horse captured in a dynamic gallop across the terrain.

The figure of the rider is central, with one arm raised to manage the birds of prey. The tension in the tethering lines and the posture of the horse suggest a moment of active pursuit or training. Fromentin employs a tonal approach to the scene, using light and shadow to define the musculature of the horse and the folds of the rider's garments. The background remains relatively atmospheric, allowing the focus to stay on the interaction between the man and the birds.

Fromentin was not merely a painter of scenes, but a keen student of the cultures he visited. His work often avoids the more fantastical elements found in other Orientalist art of the period, preferring instead to document specific customs and the physical reality of the Algerian plains. The composition demonstrates his ability to balance anatomical accuracy with a sense of narrative movement. The falconer, poised and alert, represents the traditional practices that Fromentin documented throughout his career. This print captures the monochromatic quality of the original oil painting, preserving the artist's brushwork and the subtle gradations of tone that define the form of the horse and rider against the open sky.

You might also like

Heer te paard op valkenjacht by Pieter Rottermondt
Ruiter met hond by Anthonie van den Bos

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Arab-Falconer_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119594970.jpg?v=1792196991
