The work depicts the biblical scene of Christ being baptised by John the Baptist. Minne is widely recognised for his sculptural work, yet his graphic output shares the same preoccupation with elongated forms and a sense of internalised melancholy.

The composition is defined by a rigorous use of line. Minne employs a rhythmic, almost hypnotic series of parallel strokes to construct both the figures and the surrounding environment. The water and the sky are rendered through these repetitive, flowing lines, which unify the entire surface of the print. This technique creates a decorative, flattened space that draws the viewer into the emotional state of the subjects rather than a realistic depiction of the event.

Both figures possess the characteristic ascetic, attenuated features found throughout Minne's oeuvre. Their expressions are sombre and introspective, reflecting the artist's interest in the spiritual and the psychological. The heavy, dark drapery of John the Baptist contrasts with the exposed, vulnerable form of Christ, creating a visual tension between the two. The woodcut medium allows for a stark, high-contrast aesthetic that emphasises the graphic quality of the design. By stripping away extraneous detail, Minne focuses on the essential gestures and the quiet, solemn interaction between the two men. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to translate his sculptural concerns into the two-dimensional plane, maintaining a consistent visual language that prioritises mood and form over narrative clarity.

You might also like

Madonna and Child with a Bishop by Andrea Andreani
Saint Paul with Saints - Paul-Ponce-Antoine Robert by Robert de Séry

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/The-Baptism-of-Christ_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119576558.jpg?v=1792196945
